Today we were away from home most of the day. When we got home close to sunset we saw this guy. He turned around mid-meal for this “pose”.

Yesterday a neighbor couple came over to see the garden. They asked how we keep the squirrels off the feeders. When Sandy isn’t visiting, clearly, we don’t 😏 One feeder is closer in to the tree. Most of the time the birds have both feeders, but when one of the squirrels comes by, they almost always stay to the back feeder.
I understand putting chili powder on bird food will keep the squirrels from eating it. The bird’s taste receptors seem to be immune to it and it won’t stop them feeding.

We might end up doing that in the fall, a) we have talked about not allowing them to become “dependent” and b) we have a very young squirrel who needs to learn to forage. For now I have gone to filling the back feeder about 1/3 of the way each day. When it’s gone, it’s gone.
The front feeder seems to be much harder for them to reach:)
