Funny story time – the new bird bath

A month ago during a bad ice and snow storm we lost the front Amur maple. The association contracted for removal and that happened a couple weeks ago. My husband was really missing watching the birds in that tree, so I bought a new bird bath to put in the rock. Well, it catches us both off guard all the time. The two birds – one on either side of the bowl – are just at the window height, and we end up thinking the birds have finally found it. So far, no real birds though.

The daylilies, on the other hand are LOVING all the new sunlight. Rethinking that cherry tree idea. Turns out they are pretty from afar, and a royal mess when close to a sidewalk. Whodathunk????

Bird bath heater?

Over the past week or so I noticed that the bird bath has turned into a water bowl.  We are even seeing robins there, and we thought they were long gone.  This poor robin was late to the game and was left with slim pickins.

Dark eyed junkos, chickadees, bluejays, cardinals, and of course squirrels are coming for a drink.  But if I put water in at night, it freezes.  So, I ordered a bird bath heater.  Crazy, but I hear they attract birds all winter.

It will come in the next few days so I will do a follow-up.

Nice long drink

Today when I got home there was a small squirrel under the tree.  He did not look familiar.  He might be quite young.  I didn’t go outside and soon he was on the feeder.  I went to go relax and came back to find him – face in the bird bath.  He drank for the longest time and then headed back to the tree.  Time to go out and fill up that water.

Welcome to Susan’s Daily Garden

20180718_180101I decided today that I would love to begin sharing pictures from our garden, along with a short daily blog.  My goal is to provide my favorite picture each day, and then share a highlight of our time in the garden.

A few years ago I decided to simplify our garden.  “Only” daylilies, asian lilies, hosta, and sedum are added to our garden nowadays.  We have other plants, like a beautiful hibiscus and two huge shamrock plants that are old timers, and they have cherished places as well.  OK, and an occasional potted tomato plant.  Yum!

Our garden is one of our favorite places. We watch the sunrise and sunset, listen to and watch an ever growing variety of birds, watch for two white squirrels that live nearby, and enjoy the beauty of what is growing and blooming.

Right now the daylilies are absolutely delightful.  Today’s pic is one of my favorites – ‘South Seas’.

Enjoy!
